In recognition of late Madam Mok Sau-King‘s generous legacy gift, a teaching facility at the Centennial Campus now bears her name: the Mok Sau King Lecture Hall (莫秀琼講堂). Her generosity also enabled the creation of the Library Innovation Centre. Two named professorships further extend her legacy, supporting academic excellence for generations to come. The Dedication Ceremony for the Mok Sau King Lecture Hall was held on 3 November 2025.
Following the ceremony, Professor Xin He, Mok Sau-King Professor in Law and Chair Professor of Law and Society delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Pressure Versus Punishment: A Model of Tortured Confessions from Evidence in China.” In this lecture, Professor He presented a paper that proposes a novel model to understand tortured confessions. It reveals that torture is a response to the pressure to clear cases versus punishments. The model explains the amount of torture across case type and other variables. While this model is informed by the experience from China, it provides insights into other forms of tortured confessions.
