It is with great sorrow that our former colleague Dr Maisie Ooi passed away in Malaysia earlier on 15 August 2023.

Maisie joined our Faculty as an Associate Professor in August 2010 and retired in 2022. Maisie was a dedicated scholar who specialized in securities law and cross-border insolvency. Her main publication, “Shares and Other Securities in the Conflict of Law,” which was published by Oxford University Press, is a testament to her commitment to her field. She has also published in leading journals such as the Journal of Private International Law, Law Quarterly Review, and the Hong Kong Law Journal. Her scholarship was well recognized in the community of conflict of laws, and her work was frequently cited by judges and scholars.

In addition, she was the recipient of one of the largest RGC grants in our faculty. Maisie’s knowledge and expertise were highly sought-after, and she was frequently invited to give lectures and seminars in leading law schools globally. Despite her illness, Maisie continued to produce high-quality scholarship and taught her courses with vigor and dedication.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Maisie’s family and will continue to honor her memory and contributions to our faculty and the field of law.
