Dr Philip K.H. Wong (BA 1955; HonLLD 1996)

A respected member of the legal profession and a good friend of the University Dr Philip K.H. Wong (BA 1955; HonLLD 1996) passed away in 2020. Dr Wong qualified as a solicitor in 1959 and has throughout his career enjoyed a high level of professional success, building up a reputation for integrity and winning the trust of a large clientele. He was elected and served as a Council Member of the Law Society of Hong Kong (1976-1980). Between 1984 and 1989, appointed by the Governor, he served as a member of the Securities Commission, playing an active role in the work of a number of major committees. Dr Philip Wong made substantial contributions to education in general and to HKU in particular. He worked closely with former Vice-Chancellor Wang Gungwu and was active in helping set up the Hong Kong University Foundation. In February 2021, family of the late Dr Philip K.H. Wong made a donation to set up a memorial scholarship for law students. We extend our deepest condolences as well as gratitude to Dr Wong’s family.

Dr Lee Shiu (HKU Hon Fellow 1997)

It is with great sadness that the Faculty learned of the passing of Dr Lee Shiu (HKU Hon Fellow 1997) in May 2021. Dr Lee was closely associated with HKU and conferred the Honorary Fellow in 1997 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the University and the community. Born in the turbulent years of the Second World War Dr Lee’s education was interrupted and he was only able to receive three and a half years at high school. He overcame this handicap with private tuition; went on to further studies and finally gained his PhD at Yale. Following his academic pursuits in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering he went on to a career in the Paint Manufacturing Industry in Hong Kong, then later in teaching before taking up family business. His passion for philanthropy and education was shown by his many generous donations to the various educational organisations including HKU. He was also a strong supporter of our Master of Common Law (MCL) Programme. We shall remember Dr Lee’s spirit and dedication to higher education with great fondness.
