HKU Faculty of Law and Temple Chambers were honoured to co-host an inaugural lecture on 6 May 2024 at the Academic Conference Room, 11/F Cheng Yu Tung Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong. We were privileged to have Lord Briggs of Westbourne, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, to speak on the topic “Never say Never: Equity’s Reach in the Modern Age”. More than 100 judges, practitioners, alumni, staff and students filled the Academic Conference Room and live broadcasting room. The lecture was moderated by The Hon Geoffrey Ma, with the the opening and closing speeches respectively given by Professor Hualing Fu, Dean of the HKU Faculty of Law, and Mr Paul Shieh SC, Head of Temple Chambers.
Lord Briggs shared a wealth of insights on recent developments in the law of equity in the provision of remedies to tackle both novel and age-old issues. With particular reference to recent UK Supreme Court and Privy Council case law, and citing recent Hong Kong authorities on highly topical legal issues such as property in cryptocurrencies, Lord Briggs surveyed the functions served by equity in the modern age, and the influential role that other common law jurisdictions play in the development of equitable remedies.
We would like to thank our generous co-sponsor, Temple Chambers, the speakers for their contributions, and the audience for their warm support.
